Screen settings
| Over 3/4 of the web
users have their machines incorrectly set to show only 256 colors ! With this setting, all pictures on the web will look like cheap, grainy watercolors. Why do so many people have their machines set for 256 colors? Because Windows '95 (and '98) defaults to this setting, when it is installed, to deal with the possibility that your computer might be hooked up to a 1987 vintage, VGA-only monitor. Ancient displays could only handle 256 colors. If your display has been made within the last five years,
use the right mouse button (i.e. the less used one) to click on any free area of the
Windows 95 desktop -- i.e. click anywhere other than on an icon.
Now select the
"settings" tab and choose the "High Color (16-bit)" or True Color (24
bit) color option from the "color palette" drop-down menu (NOT 16 colors). Your
machine will restart and, thereafter, images, shown on your display, will be as brilliant
as the best color prints you ever got back from your photo finisher. If your graphic card allows it, you can also set the screen resolution while you are in the properties/settings menu - use the slide bar under "screen area" in the bottom right corner to adjust the resolution. With a 15" screen or larger you can usually benefit from a screen resolution of 1024 X 768. If you are using Windows 3.X, the Mac OS or any other operating system consult your manual or check with your systems administrator. |
